Quinoa - an ancient pseudo-cereal, which is nowadays more and more often found on our plates.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is a grain-like crop that was known to ancient people - the Incas - as far back as 3,000 years ago. It was grown in terraced fields in Peru, the Andes, Chile and Bolivia, where it is still used today. It was called the mother of all seeds as it was highly revered for its properties.

In the last decade, interest in quinoa has grown in our country as well. We use it for a variety of purposes. We consume its grains, which have a pleasant mild flavour reminiscent of nuts. In the diet, it is an excellent source of protein and also has a high fibre content, which ensures that we are fuller for longer.

Use it as a side dish, in desserts, sauces or as a breakfast cereal - the possibilities are endless.

Quinoa can be used like millet and amaranth, in many ways and as an additive to a variety of dishes. Of all the quinoa varieties, white has the mildest flavor and the lightest texture, making it suitable for use in:

  • combined with various vegetables (as a side dish or as a stand-alone dish),
  • soups and stews,
  • biscuits, pancakes, puddings and other sweets,
  • sauces as a thickener,
  • in the form of (expanded) breakfast cereals and porridges,
  • salads (as a source of protein).

Use

Recommended Use: Rinse the quinoa under cold running water and then quickly fry it in a frying pan. For every cup and a half of quinoa, add 1 tablespoon of neutral oil. Fry in the pan, about 6-8 minutes, over medium heat. Stir constantly to prevent burning. Then cook it: for every cup of quinoa, add 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Stir in the quinoa and reduce the heat. Cover and cook until all the liquid is absorbed, about 15 minutes. Stir with a fork to separate the grains. Quinoa can be added to salads, soups and used in place of rice in cooked dishes.
